Bridal bouquets

The  History

They're not just beautiful accessories: The wedding bouquet and veil both originated as ways for the bride to ward off evil.Traditional Celtic bouquets included ivy, thistle and heather. The garland was not made of flowers but of strong-smelling herbs and spices. The strong-smells were thought to have mystical powers and meant to keep away evil spirits.

Tradition

Tossing the bouquet is a tradition that stems from England. Women used to try to rip pieces of the bride's dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away.

Custom

This custom seems to have evolved quite a bit from its origin, but todays tradition for the bouquet: added beauty and personal expression.

Herb of lust

The dill from the bride's bouquet (also known as the herb of lust), was consumed by the bride, the groom, and their wedding guests during the reception, as the herb was meant to increase sexual desire.

Smell pretty

One of the reasons that brides carried bouquets was born out of the ‘necessity’ of covering odor, trying to smell pretty on that special day.

Ancient Times

In ancient Greece and Rome, the bride and groom wore a garland around their necks, symbolizing new life, hope and fertility.
